Thanks for sharing that!

I flipped through, and noticed that there were a LOT of the images (I assume they are original woodcuts), and was mourning the fact that my edition does not have all of those really great extra images.

Is there a modern reprint edition that contains all of those images that is also not to difficult to obtain? Or am I going to have to conent myself with only being able to view and study those images online?

Thanks again for sharing!

Very cool, but short. Does anyone know what the date of those illustrations are? Love the cutlashes.

The title page says 1678.

I find it surprising that those illustrations published in 1678 depict the buccaneers wearing more mid 17th century ECW type of clothes. It would suggest that the upcoming long straigth coat or justacorp was not the trend in the 1660s early 70s among flibustier. What do you think?

Also, I'm reading a commented version of the first French print (1688 I think) and Exquemellin mentions that the buccanneers would go raiding wearing only a shirt and some breeches and would put on clothes that they find in their loot. I guess that way you have more hand to cary your loot. Since they were attacking mostly Spaniard, does it mean that most buccaneers or at least succesfull buccaneers should be portrayed wearing Spanish fashion?

Hard to say... we've talked about illustrations before, and I know some/many/most don't believe they should be taken as gospel.

I'd say so. And I think the statement that they went out undressed (as it were) and came back dressed pushes the point home.
