Hi guys,

I have noticed that almost every reenactors doing late 17th to mid 18th century have pretty much the same double "D" belt buckle. Is there something else available out there?

Belt buckles... hmmm... I did a quick flip through my book of Spanish artifacts, and during our period, they looked to be all double d.

Have you tried the Spanish artifacts website? I know they have a bunch of pics of buckles.

I just did and you're right they are all double d type. I was just curious to know if it was another example of everybody looking the same because they buy at the same place. I guess not this time. Cool I'll do the same.

I should check Ivor Noel Hume's book to see what he has to say.
And fwiw, it looks like you back into the 17thC far enough, the buckle shapes change.
In the 16thC I believe the Spanish book showed a trend toward rounder buckles (but don't quote me on that).

And the English started to gravitate towards more round cornered rectangular buckles later int he 17th century and more so in the early 18th. I don't have a citation for this, just the collection of extant buckles I bought off GoF to back this up.

Although I think one of the Nuemann books touches on this.
