These were pointed out to me "over there." Closest representation of Whydah holsters I have yet to see, but they aren't exactly correct... at least not from what I recall. However, that being said, they do look much like those seen in contemporary illustrations.

Those look pretty simple, I would prefer a full holster and no rivit to scratch the gun. I bet we could make these ourselves. Isn't there a picture of some captain wearing two of these on either side of a cartidgebox?

Ok, its off topic but I could not resist.

OMG, I am pretty sure Blackbeard would have worn this if he had it:
http://www.dorsetthouse.com/armour_of_the_magi.htm
At least the prize would have been so busy laughing and pissing themselves they would not have been able to defend. Come on, you would wear it too if you were drunk enough. Ok, you have to admit this one is actually pretty cool looking: http://www.dorsetthouse.com/our_armour.htm I think its the dangly bits.

Please note that this stuff is under the "Historical" section on the website.

Ok, I nearly have it out of my system now.

Regarding the holsters:
These holsters do look kind of like some of the illustrations and what I recall of the Whydah ones, but I agree that they look too big somehow. Of course, the illustrations seem to show tiny little pistols too.

I wonder what level he is? Do you think my ranger can wear that and still gets two attacks per turn?

Yeah, I've seen more than a few pics of famous pirate captain wearing a similar rig. I wish I had access to my alma mater library, with the "more better" illustration version of Capt Johnsons' book.

Hmmm... now I'm wondering... I wonder what the smallest pistol found on the Whydah was. But I digress...

Hey Scurvy Hanna, you are a maker of stuff. Try making a holster!

I am making warm clothing right now. Will do a holster in the future. I think they would work well with a queen anne I don't know about dragoons, might be a bit long.

I have never seen the buckets you have posted but they are similar to the ones dragoons would use. The differance being the dragoon pistol buckets are closed on the bottom

Machate, I wonder if any of the customer gun makers you mention in your musket posting could make the tiny little (presumably) screw barrel pistols we see in illustrations all the time? I bet there would be a good market for them if cheap!

Will ask. I talk to Buck a couple times a month and Day is calling me this week to dicuss somethings.

I do know Buck is making the William III dragoon pistol...you know the one...14 Inch long barrel with round lock. The goal is to be around $400.00 but the barrel and lock are $250.00 by themselves. If they turn out good will be well worth it at $450.00.

Would a pirate use a dragoon pistol?

John

Yes, the archaeological finds support pirates using dragoon pistols.

I found this on ebay about a year back and saved the photo. It was listed as a broken late 17th century saddle holster and sold for @ $150. I could see a person carrying this behind their neck and tied to a belt, so that they could pull either pistol without it falling to the ground.

Fwiw, the list of artifacts from the Whydah gives the holsters as being made from protein fiber, which means they were... wool or silk?

That sounds odd. Considering a silk ribbon was found tied to one of the pistols, I wonder if that ribbon is considered to be the holster? Or if the holster really was silk or wool?

Eh... more questions than answers always seem to arise when discussing the Whydah.

In the picture of the pistol, it looks like it is almost entirely encased in some kind of fabric. Could have been some kind of wool bag for storage?

They found no tin cups? Seems odd.

According to "X Marks the Spot" the Whydah pistol was "still in its hemp cloth holster, with a silk ribbon wrapped around its handle"

I shouldn't read too much into the lack of tin cups - they've only found 8 plates and 3 bowls for a crew of 146 men, I think it's safe to say that they were either seriously short of crockery, or a vast amount of stuff has yet to be found (if ever).
