I have a Loyalist Shoe question!

Style #1 or Style #2 ...what is the difference? The pictures are not so clear and I just cannot see the detail on the #1.

Tarfoot,

If the opportunity still be there, I'm in for black size 11 roughouts. One question, though, is the light-coloured stitching correct?

Both of my pair of of the same style, but I believe the difference is the angle and style of the cut from the back quarter to the front portion of the shoe. One style has a rounded arc forward into the latchet, the other has a straighter angle forward into the latchet. The difference is pretty academic, and while Loyalist has called the two styles "late" and "early", I believe both styles existed through-out the entire period they were intended for.

I got an email from the guy stating 4 pairs will work for the discount.
If you are interested please email me directly with your order including color and size to
tancred101@comcast.net

We will then do the paypal thing and I will place the order tomorrow evening.

I would imagine the shoes would be here by May 1. No, really!

I won't be joining this buy, sorry. These shoes are too generically later 18th century for me, I already have a couple pairs like that. If you don't have any 18th century style shoes these would be fine, but they don't look any better than the ordinary fugawee/townsend/etc shoes that are out there to me. Latchets are still way too far forward. :( [On second look though, they do have a squarish looking toe - hard to tell in this picture - and narrower latches, so are better than standard rev war shoes I suppose, but those buckles are still too far forward on the foot]

It doesn't take a "picky" expert to see the difference between the shoe you are considering and a period illustration of a common shoe style of the period. See how high up the instep the buckle is on the period shoe, and how far forward it is on the repro? The repro looks like a typical rev war shoe with a long tongue added. To me, disclaimer, patent pending copyright gobledegook.

I just spent the better part of the morning reading the posts here. Wow! you are all so picky about shoes!! :D I am big on authenticity, but some things can be overlooked, especially for newbies. Just getting someone to buy their first pair of shoes is hard enough. No one wants to shell out a hundred plus bucks for shoes. Yes, it is important to portray history accurately and shoes are important, but I also find that at events the only people looking at your shoes are other reenactors. I like to have everything else as accurate as I can and take eyes away from the shoe.

Townsend shoes - I have a pair, got them years ago, I wear them still, and the buckles are too big. I Also have other shoes with a narrow foot, squarer toe and smaller buckles. I am modifying my old Townsend shoes squaring up the toe and I am removing the buckles. They are not going to be the best looking but when money is tight it works in a pinch.

All this being said I like the Loyalist shoes and when I have the cash I'll be picking them up.

You are right, if it doesn't matter to you it probably won't matter to anyone else, but if you are going to fake it hopefully the information in this picky thread will help you fake it closer to what they wore! :D I already have a couple pairs of generic rev war shoes (3rd quarter of 18th century) that I wear to events and they are fine, so if I am shelling out any more money I want them to look very much like shoes from 1700, which could be rather different to my eye.

I'm reaching the point of deciding people would rather argue about it than anything else. Page after page of what's wrong, with little help to find what is at least the best available.

Sorry, I was at a HUGE 3 day car show/gathering in Atlanta for St Pat's Day, then working like mad since.
I'm interested, just don't have the funds right now. I'm wiped out for the next few weeks.

Sorry Owen, it is just that no one makes a cheap shoe that really looks like it is from our period. The best available is probably from Sarah Juniper from England for around 300 bucks right now, which is too expensive for most obviously, but less than a few years ago because the improvement in the exchange rate (thanks Greece!).

An example of Sarah's hand made shoes, spot on for our period (I would get black):
Image

The shoes from Loyalist Arms ($125 right now) have some features from our period, but they are not much better than regular fugawees or jarnigans in my opinion, which are also cheaper, meaning you might as well get cheap fugawees or whatever other cheap rev war shoes (under 100) out there until someone does a 1700 period shoe right. That is what I am doing.

Sorry, that is just what is out there right now. The shoes that appear to be common from the GAOP are pretty distinctive and are only made by custom order. Basic rev war shoes are the closest thing available, so might as well just get cheap ones or ones you like. There appears to be a shoe in the GAOP that is rounded toe and looks kinda like these shoes, so it is not like it is completely wrong, just not so typical maybe.

I've been keeping an eye on the exchange rates for well over year now. When I checked this morning, the pound was at $1.49+. That's a pretty good rate. I've seen lower, but not recently.
